Weekly Photo Challenge-Refuge

I am loving the Weekly Photo Challenge, because it gives me the opportunity to combine both my photographic skills(?) and my blog which is about pets/animals.

There are numerous opportunities for great shots when you are surrounded by pets and animals of every description,
and as you know, I am passionate about pets!

Here is my entry for this week’s Challenge – Refuge.

"I is safe in here"

This little joey (a baby koala), is being hand-reared after he lost his mother. A joey’s refuge is his mother’s pouch where he feeds from the nipple until he grows to maturity. As he grows and becomes more independent, he will come out and ride on his mother’s back, but in times of danger, he hops back in for safety!  It’s his refuge.

When hand-rearing a joey, a pouch is made from a blanket, a towel, (or something similar), to mimic his mother’s pouch. If they are particularly young, the pouch is heated as they need to be kept continuously warm.   He will be kept in the handmade pouch for as long as he needs it, but will come out to play from time to time.

    • No, I would have liked to, but a friend of mine reared him. To be allowed to rear native injured animals, you have to be a Certified Wildlife Carer; I am going to apply.

  5. Sweet! I didn’t realize that baby koala’s were called joey’s too, I thought they would be called cubs because of them being named bears. lol This is why I enjoy blogging, I learn so much. Thank you for sharing the info & fun refuge photo. :)

  6. That’s an adorable photo Barb! Thanks for visiting my blog too – hope to see you there again! You mentioned that your dog Poppy looks a lot like our Daisy – is Poppy a Havanese/Bichon mix also?

PS- Daisy’s snout is actually shorter than it appears in the photo – my camera tends to do that, which is why I refuse to allow anyone to take photos of me with it! LOL

  7. When I was a kid in Sweden, I had a little stuffed koala. It was given to me as a gift on a ship that was visiting in the harbour. I named my koala after the ship … ‘Kiribilli’

    • Stuffed toy koalas are a favourite gift from Australia.
It’s funny you calling your stuffed koala “Kirribilli”, because that is the name of the Sydney official residence of our Prime Minister – Kirribilli House!

  8. Good Morning Barb(4:00am here)
What a cutie…like Rose I didn’t know they were called Joey’s either…never too old to learn.
Hmmmmm I used to have a Koala bear(stuffed)…..wonder what ever happened to it?

  9. A joey is the proper name for the young of any marsupial (pouched mammal) – kangaroo, koala, wombat, wallaby or a Tasmanian Devil.

I am curious to know what your idea is after seeing my photo Rose! Glad I have inspired you!

  11. Barb, that is so adorable. I didn’t realize that baby koala’s were called joey’s too! I guess I never gave it much thought.

Your photo has given me an idea of one that I can use. :-)

Penny for your thoughts . . .
