Today, September 1 is the first day of Spring in Australia!
Yes, winter is officially over, although we can’t really grumble because our winters up here in sub-tropical Queensland are mild to say the least. We have cold nights with a low of 5C, and beautiful warm days up to 26C.
Not so in other states further south where the temperatures get below freezing in winter, and in some places, it even snows!
Our State of Queensland is often described as “Beautiful one day, perfect the next” and it’s so true.
Now we are in Spring, the temperatures start to rise steadily, bringing life and colour back into the garden again.
Sure, we get our share of cyclones and floods in the wet season (December/January), but we take it all in our stride as Queenslanders do and just get on with the clean-up once it’s over – like true Aussie battlers!
Just wanted to let you know.
On September 5, I am flying to the UK where it will be Autumn (fall), and I’ve been warned to bring plenty of winter woolies! I’ll be away for a month, so when I return home, our Spring will be in full swing!

Fancy going away just at Spring time! I live in Melbourne, and have been waiting so long for Spring! Hope you had a great trip though…
I was on vacation myself and hadn’t had a chance to drop by your blog for awhile. Wow! What a streamlined new look it has! But I’m glad pets are still the highlight. I hope your vacation is marvelous. If you’re like me, you’ll be wanting to pet every dog you see there, because you miss your own so much!
Glad you like the new look of my blog, thanks for the complement!
I am still passionate about pets and they will always be my main topic, but I needed to broaden my posts a little, so now I include people to.!
I miss my dog terribly, but my friend who is looking after her whilst I am away is posting photos of her on FaceBook nearly every day to let me know she is just fine and not fretting for me! And you are right, I can’t keep my hands off any dog I see,to compensate for not having my own with me!
Yes it’s very different here!! Rain is on its way
Enjoy your trip!
We arrived this morning and guess what? It was raining! I seem to remember that was one of the reasons for emigrating to Oz!
Hello to you! I just saw a comment by you, on “Mumsie’s” WordPress blog, and I came over. I’ve been blogging a long time, but recently moved to WordPress. And I’m still finding my way around here. -smile-
You are starting Spring. And we are starting Autumn.
I always am kind of amazed, when I remember that life is very different in the 2 Hemispheres. Guess we each (in our own Hemisphere) get to thinking that the Seasons are the same, in all blogs. Which I know, is silly, because it’s a big world! Not just our part. And all that.
Anyway, I wish you a lovely Spring!
And I wish you a lovely Autumn Holiday in the UK!!!!!! How exciting! I’m glad you said you are bringing your laptop, so you can share your holiday, with us, on your blog.
I’ve never had the chance to visit the UK but I love pictures of it, and especially love to read “Cozy British Mysteries.” Where the reader is immersed into the life of a small British country village…. With it’s beauty and all it’s local people, etc.
So Hello from the upper North East of the US. I hope you will have a chance to stop by my WordPress blog some time, and say Hi.
Gentle hugs,

Thanks for checking out my blog and commenting – I love it when someone new drops by!
I will be taking lots of pics of the UK whilst here, and will share many of them on here, so watch this space!!
I checked out your blog and think it’s great – I’m an avid reader too! We will get along great!
Have a great trip to the UK ! Love your new blog ! Looking forward to hearing from you with all the details of your journey. Stay safe !!
Thanks Penny! See you when I get back!
How wonderful, you get to enjoy my two favorite seasons! I love the crispness of fall and the renewal of spring. I hope you have a fun, safe journey. Enjoy every moments of it!
Thanks Tara, it will be nice to be in England and experience the crispiness of Autumn and see the leaves on the trees change colour.
I love your blog by the way, you have a deep strength that shines through. You have another follower!
Happy Spring Day, Barb. Sorry I’m a bit late! Enjoy your trip…
Thanks Denise, and no worries, nice to see you here.
Hi Barb…how exciting for you.
Hope you have a wonderful time.
Our area has not caught on that it is supposed to be spring.
However, the proteas a bursting out on the mountain.
Thanks granny, only 2 days to go now, I’m so excited!
Looks like you will have to make do with the proteas until Spring decides to warm up everything else! I love proteas
Have a great time away and a safe trip over and back, enjoy your family and the delicous scones and fish and chips of England
Thanks Cathy – and one of the things on my list is to taste some good old English fish and chips again – yummy (just once)!
I’m so excited for you, Barb.
Hope the weather in the UK is glorious for you.
Thanks Nancy, you can tell I’m getting excited too! Only three more days to go!
I just hope the colder weather over there isn’t too cold if you know what I mean.
Spring is such a beautiful time of year! My bird feeder really gets a workout during that time. Much to my surprise, this past spring here in Florida, I saw a “painted bunting.” It was simply gorgeous. I loved the red, green and blue colors. Interestingly enough, I had no idea what kind of bird it was until I looked it up on the internet. That beautiful bird was definitely a sight to behold! Anyway, have a wonderful time on your trip Barb. We’ll be here when you get back.
I’ve never seen a “painted bunting” – it sounds beautiful. Hope you got a photo of it!
I’ll tell you all about my trip when I get back home!
Bon voyage!
Stay dry, warm, stiff upper lip, all those clichés —
but mostly ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY every moment –
Thanks, I will enjoy and savour every day!
We’re just about to start autumn in a few weeks here in the US, and I can’t wait! I just love the fall colors and the cool temperatures, it feels so invigorating!
I think it’s much easier to take bad storms in stride when you’re used to them and you know what to expect. Where I live, hurricanes are rare occurrences and our properties aren’t prepared at all, so when we get one, it’s a very big deal with major ramifications. Sometimes I think it’s better to live where you’re used to all kinds of weather-related challenges so you’re ready for anything and never caught off-guard!
Have a WONDERFUL trip to the UK – I’m so envious!! Can’t wait to hear all about it!
I know what you mean – our houses are built purposely to withstand cyclones, it’s one of the building regulations when building a new house. The houses that suffer cyclone damage are usually the older ones that were built years ago – they don’t stand a chance.
When I arrive in the UK, it will be their Autumn (fall), and I’m looking forward to seeing the changing colours of the season. We don’t have Autumn here in Oz and it’s something I’ve always missed about the UK.
Lucky you. Enjoy the weather at home. Then get ready to bundle up again! Have a safe trip! ( take lots of pics)
Thank you, and yes, I will take lots of pics!
wow, it is hard to imagine that somewhere in the world it has been winter when it has been so hot here! what is christmas like for you guys? does santa wear a hawaiin shirt and board shorts and drive a dune buggy? hard to imagine that the images we get (of a jolly old man in a fuzzy red winter suit, sledding through the snow) would work for you guys!
Haha! Christmas in Australia comes at the hottest time of the year, right in the middle of our hot and humid summer!. A lot of people spend it at the beach trying to keep cool but we stay home and have a barbeque outside with family and friends. It’s too hot to make a hot meal!
A lot of Aussies celebrate Christmas in July which is our winter, so they can cook a hot meal and enjoy it in the cooler temperatures!
Yes, our Christmases are very different to the Northern Hemisphere!
Happy Spring, and happy travels! September has finally arrived and I love it! I’ll have to give some serious thoughts too, about what to pack in the way of clothes..
We can exchange travel stories when we get back to our respective countries!
Have a wonderful trip Rebekah!
Spring is such a wonderful season of birth and rebirth and colour. In twenty days it will be the first day of Fall here – looking forward to seeing the leaves change colour. It will be damp, damp, damp in England so for sure take your woolies. Have a fabulous trip.
Thanks Joss – only 4 more days to go now, I’m getting so excited!
Happy Spring Day Barb! This is what I love about our blogging community; we experience and enjoy all climes and locations from our desks… I can’t believe your trip is around the corner now! Do keep us posted as I know you’ll have a fantastic time in the UK.
Thanks Elizabeth! Don’t worry, I’m taking my laptop, so will still be here from time to time!
Hi,
Yes it was a beautiful day today for the first day of Spring, and many more to come no doubt. A lovely post for the beginning of Spring.
Hi Mags! Yes, it was a beautiful day for the first day of Spring up here on the Fraser Coast, glad it was the same in Brissie!
I’ll soon be in the UK (another 4 days), dealing with their Autumn!
Happy days eh Barb! Spring Summer, picnics and lovely days lazing around. From what you say the Winter seaso sounds just as good,
Have a safe flighty to Old Blighty, and from what I have seen you will def. need your winter woollies and winter drawers!
Are you taking your laptop? Will you still be with us?
I hope that you have a great time visiting all the relatives and family! How about picking me up on the way!!!!
Yes, I’m taking my laptop, so should still be with you now and again!
You want to go to England again? You just went! Missing your daughters already huh? I’d pick you up if I could!
