Weekly Photo Challenge:Family

This post is inspired by a prompt from this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge : Family

On an early morning walk the other day, I spotted these kangaroos at the end of my street.
It was very early, about 6am, so they were still grazing.
By 7am (the usual time I would have been there), they would have finished and gone back into the bush so I would have missed them.

Now you see why I always carry my camera everywhere – you never know what might pop up!

A family of kangaroos enjoying the early morning sun. They are so curious!

A close-up reveals she is carrying a Joey (baby kangaroo). See his legs sticking out of the pouch?

They say the early bird catches the worm, and I certainly did that morning!

  2. oh how lovely, i saw a few squirrels recently up in the tree, boy can they make a noise, the cats were going nuts, no pun intended btw lol

    • It’s quite common for us to see kangaroos where I live, and we often take it for granted, but I knew what a kick my overseas readers would get out of seeing some pics like this.
      Glad you enjoyed them shell.

  3. Wow! So up close and personal with the ‘roos!
Guess they are kind of like the elk and deer families we see browsing and napping at our place. Haven’t seen any in awhile but hope to now that hunting season is over. Thank you SO much for sharing the wonders of the Australian animal kingdom. What a treat!

    • I’ve never been able to get that close before that day (they usually hop into the bush), but that female seemed very curious about me, letting me get pretty close before she hopped away with her joey safe in her pouch!
You probably see elk and deer in your area like we see the kangas; I’d love to see some pics of the deer!

  4. Terrific choice… I thought the babies always sat with their heads sticking out but that is for TV! In real life they hope in anyway they wish… TY!
TY for your patience as I have been adjusting to a changed schedule in my life … Glad to comment again. :-)

    • No, this is the real deal – they just hop in the pouch, head first, then sort themselves out once in there!
I have been wondering where you were Eliz – hope you are getting used to your new schedule – and nice to see you on my blog again!

  5. Gosh, you’re so lucky to witness this in your own street – we just get cats and dogs around here, nothing exciting. Well done on capturing this – I had to do a double-take when I saw the Joey!!

  6. Amazing! What a great opportunity to see these critters! So glad you shared the photos. Thanks to another blogger that I happened across – Joss Burnel – for pointing me in your direction!

  7. How did I miss this one?! it’s totally awesome — a beautiful family, and just the thought of seeing kangaroos in real life is so far from here. I think God had a sense of humour when He created a lot of animals, but kangaroos must be way up on the list :o )

  9. Wow, how strange and wonderful to see these animals just wandering around free. I feel that way whenever I see deer. I can’t imagine seeing a kangaroo! You must feel so lucky to have caught this moment on camera.

    • I was lucky to get so close to them too, before they all hopped off into the bush! We have such interesting and unusual wildlife here, and some amazing parrots – that’s why I always take my camera with me everywhere I go.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  10. I love these photos Barb! It’s great to see such beautiful animals roaming free as nature intended them to be. I hope that they have lots of natural habitat where they can roam freely. It must be a real treat to have kangaroos nearby. I imagine it’s a bit like living in paradise! You are so lucky to get such great shots! Anyway, thanks for sharing. :)

    • Thanks Donna – now you see why I always take my camera with me wherever I go! This area where we live is teeming with wildlife, some of the parrots we see are incredibly beautiful. Waiting to get a decent shot of one (or two)!

  11. I think that is fantastic! Wow! what a picture… Not the sort of thing that I would see in Bulgaria but because of you and WordPress I am privileged to see it…
Thank you my dear lady that has given me great pleasure

    • Glad my photos could give you such pleasure Patrecia! We see ‘roos every day and take them for granted, but reading everyone’s comments has made me realize how lucky I am.

    • The reason we see them here is because I live in a country area but close to the beach. Tilly. They can rip you to shreds with their feet if you get too close, but they are usually too frightened of people, and hop away. The mother with the baby was just curious about me, she would have hopped off if I’d gotten much closer.

      • I live about 6km from the city, but friends of ours that have a rural block see the roos often, I haven’t seen a joey up there for awhile, but there should be a few around soon. :)

  12. That is so incredible, that there are kangaroos at the bottom of your street, even if you have to get up at the crack of dawn (or even before dawn cracks) to see them. I feel like you are living in the midst of a movie —-
(BTW, I agree with you about God’s sense of humor. If you described an animal like that to someone, they’d laugh at you!)

    • Australia has some very unique wildlife, the kangaroo being one of them. Some of our birds and parrots are very unusual too! I feel lucky to live in such a place.

  13. Oh how cool! The most wildlife we get here is deer or wild turkeys. And I thought Joeys pouch-traveled with their heads sticking out, not their legs! Good grief, how do they breathe in there?? LOL Great photos!! :)

  14. Fabulous pictures, and so cute a little one inside with the little legs and feet sticking out, precious. what a great part of the world you live in. So wonderful to walk about and see beautiful creatures…so nice, thank you so much for sharing the pictures.

    • God obviously had a sense of humour when he created the kangaroo they have a very weird looking body! They are fascinating animals though.I guess I am lucky to be able to see them hopping around in the bush nearby, but we often take this for granted.
