W is for Werribee Open Range Zoo
This is an African themed zoo in Werribee which is 32 kilometres (20 miles) south-west of the city of Melbourne, Victoria, and set on 560 acres (225 hectares).
The zoo’s major exhibits are the Hippopotamus, Lion, Zebra, Giraffe, Meerkat, Ostrich and Rhinoceros.
The Lions Feeding Time is a very interesting event . . . .
You wonder why the lion was so tame, or how come the visitors were so calm, right?
Only the hood of the car is outside the glass cage with the lions. The rest of the car is on the inside.
A very interesting way of interacting with the lions!
And – in case you were wondering, the seats are cleaned after every trip!
If you want more information, check out the Zoo’s website here

I suspected that because the lion would love to kill his own meat if possible…
And those people looked calm and were smiling – kind of gave it away!
That is too cool. I want to go there!
Ready to make the long trip Down Under?
I would so love to! Unfortunately, my bank account says otherwise.
Holy smack!! I did wonder how they were sure the lion wouldn’t attack the peeps.
No wonder the people looked so calm!
Wow, I have seen such a thing. That’s amazing
Judy
Glad you liked it!
Wow, i was nervous there for a minute, thinking no way, but how cool is that. Would be fun
Pretty cool, huh?
When I saw the first photo I thought “you Aussies are bloody nuts”
What a novel idea.
Haha! Most people think we are nuts Granny!
I’m so glad to see they’re letting the animals roam free in natural-type environments. I don’t like the idea of zoos keeping animals in cages and tight, unnatural areas; this is much better.
Such an interesting concept to have the car drive right up to the lions!
It’s better to see these animals in an environment like this, where they can roam around as they would in the wild, rather than a miserable cage – zoos have come a long way in the past few years, thank goodness.
~rofl~ Oh my that’s so amazing and what good fun!
Happy Easter!
Happy to give you a chuckle!
Terrific “W” topic, Barb. You know, I live so close yet have never been. After reading this, I’m seriously keen to go.
Driven past it probably 200 times!
Thanks Robyn!
You should visit that zoo and give us a first hand account – with pics!
I’ll definitely keep that in mind! Will have to wait until the budget improves a bit first.
Oh man Barb, I was thinking What the??? How cool is that! Wow! Margie
haha! Had you fooled for a second . . .
Awesome, Barb . . . shared with BFF!
That would be an amazing sight to behold . . . from behind the plexiglass.
Thanks for sharing Nancy! I imagine it would still be a bit scary, even behind the plexi-glass!
One of the thrills of my life was being at the Quebec City Zoo when they were feeding the lions. I was about ten feet from a male lion when he let out a roar. It was an amazing experience to hear this “live”. I’ve never forgotten.
The sound of that roar must have been something – what a wonderful experience Joss!
I’ve never forgotten the feeling.
Ha ha! That was a great arrangement! Getting to see the big cat that close and still feel safe
Great stuff..
It’s a brilliant idea Rebekah! Safe behind the plexi-glass!
Hehe! Good one!
I wondered if there was glass in between…lol.
Whew, had to go and look. I know I am always behind, but for a minute I thought I missed most of the alphabet.
Haha, did I fool you? I’ve had this post in my mind for a while and decided to chuck it in now even though it’s at the end of the alphabet!
Hi,
I love it, what a very unique idea, and look at that wonderful area the lions have, really looks like a fantastic place to see the animals.
It’s a great idea Mags – you get to see the lions really close up, without the danger!
Hahaha, Barb! What will they think of next, I wonder!
Hi Denise! It would be quite an experience I would think!
