Weekly Photo Challenge: Up

The Weekly Photo Challenge for this week is ‘Up’

I had to think hard about this one, as the word UP brings to mind all sorts of meanings, so I started looking through my photographs for inspiration as to what photos to use for the challenge.

Keeping the niche of my blog in mind, I came across some photos of pelicans perched high UP on a lamp post; it’s not every day you see pelicans flying around free as a bird (pardon the pun), but we are privileged here in Australia to see them often; let me tell you about them.

When I was down at the beach one day, the resident pelicans were flying around in droves, many of them standing outside a local beachfront seafood restaurant.  This restaurant throws out any bits of the fish they can’t use – and the pelicans know it.
They know the exact time it happens, and are always there five minutes before, waiting!
They fight each other to be the first to catch every morsel that is thrown out, making a heck of a noise in the process!
It has actually become a local attraction.

I never realized they were such big birds till I saw them for myself – they are absolutely huge – and there must have been well over a hundred of them there that day, all buzzing around!

I took these photos one day following their feeding frenzy outside the restaurant; after they had had their fill, some flew UP to  perch  on lamp posts, pruning themselves and savouring their tasty meal. They still looked huge way UP there!

I wouldn’t like to stand underneath them for too long!

Weekly Photo Challenge: My 2012 in pictures

The Photo Challenge this week “My 2012 in Pictures” is an awesome way to put my whole year, month by month, into twelve photos.

It’s been quite a year, much has happened, but I will try to keep it to twelve pictures using the tiled gallery option.

Come and look back on 2012 with me and click on any photo for a full screen view.

Weekly Photo Challenge-Mine

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is entitled “Mine”

These two are mine

My Girls – Poppy & Penny

Sadly, Penny has passed over Rainbow Bridge , so now there is only one – Poppy is my shadow, my faithful and loyal companion – MINE!

But I do share her – sometimes!

Poppy

Weekly Photo Challenge-Today

This week’s Photo Challenge is about TODAY.

This day. The day you’re reading and reacting to this post.
No rules or guidance on what to post other than the photo must be taken today!

Here is my offering.

In spite of the wet weather, (believe it or not, it is not always hot and sunny in Oz!), we enjoyed a BBQ outside today with some friends.

Chicken Kebabs on a skewer with salad and potato salad – yummy!

The Chicken Kebabs

The hub made his special chicken kebabs – chicken, mushrooms, onion, tomato, red, green and yellow capsicums, fed onto a skewer. I marinated the kebabs overnight in a recipe given to me by my friend, consisting of
plain yogurt
horseradish
juice of one lemon
 grated lemon rind

Oops – caught out!

The Potato Salad
No decent pic except the one above where the hub is helping himself to some.
You will have to use your imagination!

I made my famous potato salad which is always very popular with my friends.
I say ‘famous’, because when friends invite us to a BBQ,  they always request that I bring one.
They say “it’s to die for” and I’m sure it will be brought up in my epitaph!

Here’s how I make mine:
Red skinned potatoes cubed & boiled al dente
2 hard boiled eggs chopped finely
mayonnaise
wholegrain (seeded) mustard
cooked pieces of bacon
red onion chopped small (raw)
dash of Italian Salad Dressing
Mix together & dress with a little parsley or chopped shallots

A Birthday

Also, TODAY was a canine birthday celebration.
My friend’s dog Sheba reached the grand old age of 14,
and she enjoyed her special day with our dog Poppy.

Happy Birthday Today, Sheba!

Weekly Photo Challenge-Waiting

The Daily post haven’t come up with the usual Photo Challenge Theme for this week, but someone else had the bright idea to come up with our own Theme.

So this week’s Photo Challenge is – Waiting

Waiting . . . to be let in

Waiting . . . for Daddy to come home

Waiting . . . for dinner

Weekly Photo Challenge:Breakfast

This week’s Photo Challenge is about one of my favourite topics,  food!

This week it’s about

Breakfast.

I have to confess, my very favourite has got to be bacon and eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes, a slice of toast and hot, steaming  coffee!

Hmm, very nice, but not wise to eat this every day, so other mornings have  a bowl of fresh fruit, topped with yogurt
and sprinkled with cinnamon – a much healthier option!

There are no carbs in this breakfast, so a slice of toast spread with butter and Vegemite is recommended to keep you going till lunchtime (hey, I am an Aussie, remember!)

Have you ever tried Vegemite on Toast?

Weekly Photo Challenge – Hidden

Weekly Photo Challenge – Hidden

It was thundering and lightening, rain coming down in torrents and making a dreadful noise.

Poppy hates storms and always finds a hiding place – this time it was under all the cushions on the couch!

I'm hiding, the storm can't get me in here!

Weekly Photo Challenge-Entrance

The Weekly Photo Challenge this week is “Entrance”.

This Rose Arbor is in a local park but it was winter at the time I took this photo, so it’s not in it’s full splendour!
Wait till summer comes and it will be covered in brilliant blooms!

Rose Arbor Entrance - minus the roses!

Weekly Photo Challenge-Colorful

Here is my offering for the Weekly Photo Challenge – the very colourful Rainbow Lorikeet

This bird is a true parrot, and can be found all down the Eastern coast of Australia from Queensland to South Australia.

They fly in large flocks and when they nest for the night, their screeching is deafening as they search

out the branch of a tree.  If you are trying to have a conversation with someone at the time, forget it!
